MP Urges Groups To Apply for Celebrate Canada Funds

TOBIQUE-MACTAQUAC – Although summer seems like a long time away, organizations need to plan now for activities under the Celebrate Canada program.

Mike Allen, Member of Parliament for Tobique-Mactaquac, reminds local groups that the deadline to apply for funding to hold Canada Day (July 1), National Aboriginal Day (June 21) and Canadian Multiculturalism Day (June 27) events is Feb. 28.

“People in the riding are very patriotic and we always enjoy the celebrations in our communities, so I encourage all eligible organizations to get their applications into the Department of Canadian Heritage before the end of the month,” said the Chair of the Conservative Atlantic Caucus. “Applications postmarked after Feb. 28, will not be accepted.”

Those eligible for funding include non-profit organizations, Canadian businesses with projects that are non-commercial in nature, educational institutions, municipal governments and other municipal and provincial institutions. Funding is available for promotional expenses, communications, entertainment, supplies and equipment.

For Canada Day, birthday cake is the only eligible food expense, but for National Aboriginal Day and Canadian Multiculturalism Day, ceremonial and traditional food may be eligible. Fireworks may also be eligible, along with administrative costs.

Funding applications can be found at www.celebratecanada.pch.gc.ca. Organizations may also contact Celebrate Canada! Program, 1045 Main Street, Unit 106 Moncton, N.B. E1C 1H1 or call 1-506-851-7052 or 1-800-561-7146 for more information.

“We live in a great country and it’s important to celebrate Canada, as well as the diverse cultures that make up the national population and that of Tobique-Mactaquac,” said Mr. Allen. “I look forward to attending as many of the local events as I possibly can this summer.”

Upper Stone Ridge Bridge to be Replaced; Route 109 to be Improved
Federal and provincial governments are making joint investments in the
replacement of the Upper Stone Ridge covered bridge and in the upgrading
of Route 109. The announcement late last month was made in Burtts Corner
by Tobique-Mactaquac MP Mike Allen and New Brunswick Transportation
Minister Denis Landry.
Fire destroyed the Upper Stone Ridge covered bridge in October 2008.
Construction of a new bridge will begin in June, with completion expected
in September. The bridge is located on the Keswick River in York County.
“When the Upper Stone Ridge covered bridge was destroyed, the community
lost its only access to Morehouse Corner across the Keswick River,” said
Allen. “The Government of Canada is proud to partner with the Province of
New Brunswick to help rebuild this important bridge.
“Through our Infrastructure Stimulus Fund, the Government of Canada
is not only creating jobs and stimulating the economy, we are also helping
communities have access to important infrastructure, such as the bridge and
highway we are announcing today.”
The federal government is making a contribution of $180,000 under the
Infrastructure Stimulus Fund to replace the bridge, while the province is
investing a matching amount, arriving at a total of $360,000.
“This cherished landmark was the last covered bridge that spanned the
Keswick River,” Landry said of the Upper Stone Ridge covered bridge. “I
am pleased that the federal government has joined us to replace this piece
of rural infrastructure, which will benefit people and this region. These
investments will deliver immediate benefits and will be the foundation of
sustainable long-term economic growth and self-sufficiency.”
The federal government is also making a contribution of $362,500 under
the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund to improve Route 109, with the provincial
government making a matching investment, for a total of $725,000. Work
will include pavement repairs from the Trout Brook area to Tobique River #3.
The federal $4-billion Infrastructure Stimulus Fund is a component of
Canada’s Economic Action Plan. The fund invests in construction-ready
infrastructure projects that can be completed by March 31, 2011.

Thank You to the Gentlemen Who Helped Me When
My silver VW went off the road on the 105 next to the generating station the
morning of January 29th. The roads were quite slippery and my car ended
up in the snow bank on the opposite side of the road. It was very dark and
I was alone in my car. Thank you for checking on me and also for getting
my car back on the road so quickly. Without your help I would have
needed a tow truck. Your kindness on that morning means more that you
may realize. Sincerely, Lisa St-Onge
